The Better Reading Partnership

The Better Reading Partnership aspires to encourage children to increase their awareness and understanding of literacy and reading, and therefore, it envisages that the child will in turn participate and interact more in the classroom.  This programme is based on a trained, Garda vetted volunteer working with a child on a one to one basis, for 15 minutes a day, three times a week, for a period of ten weeks.

The literacy skills these children have learnt and now clearly understand are due to the Better Reading Partnership, offering additional support to students, parents and teachers.  The Better Reading Partnership has impacted greatly on the children, not only academically but also with regard to a new found confidence in the subject, greater social and interaction skills during maths class. The children, who previously struggled with reading, now display increasing confidence with the subject.  This confidence with literacy and reading will accompany them throughout their lives.

The Better Reading Partnership would not have been as effective as it has been without the commitment and efforts of local schools. For example in 2009, a total of eleven local schools were involved in the Better Reading Partnership.  This means 79 children, 54 primary school children and 25 post-primary school children, were introduced to, completed and benefitted from the Better Reading Partnership programme.  The Education Section of Tolka Area Partnership looks forward to continuing to be committed to this project.
